inaccessible at a pedestrian scale. Typical lots in Barra are much larger than lots in Centro, and therefore it is almost impossible to get around Barra without a car. Because of this, every lot is surrounded by a large parking lot, which acts as a buffer between Barra’s programed activity and its public circulation corridors. By slicing through these lots with an overlay zoning program, the Pop n Swap system provides a layer of secondary circulation that weaves in and out, over and under the currently isolated lots that make up Barra’s urban fabric. If your lot intersects the pop n swap overlay zone, you will be awarded a land swap. This swap will both bring public to your enterprise as well as provide a connection from your lot to the Pop n swap hub at the former Terra Encantada site. This mixed use hub will have a BRT stop, a subway stop, and an underground parking hub. Your swap area will be determined by your parcel size and parking ratio. In the swap area on your site, the elevated urban corridor will expand into, through, around or down around your building, providing a new vibrant public space that you can input advertising, retail experiments, office gathering space, sports fields, anything you want, as long as it is public and as long as it maintains the constant urban corridor movement from parcel to parcel. You will also get an equal amount of space within the armature of the pop n swap hub. The pop n swap armature will house a constantly changing, vibrant true mixed use interactive space, which a little slice of each different enterprise in barra’s vacinity. Eventually, a continuous urban corridor will weave through Barra. But rather than just simply being a neutral public circulatory strand, the pop n swap corridor will be dynamically activated by the mix of programs that make of barra, but that are currently hidden behind closed gates, parking lots, and unaccessible space. Simultaneously, a vibrant mixed use center will be developing at the pop n swap hub. As a major transit station both within barra and from centro, the pop n swap hub will always be the most active place in barra. The installation is comprised of a double-sided bench which transforms through a series of 119 unique and interconnected sections into a chaise lounge and finally an interactive balance board. These sections are connected via an inventive pivot and bolt system which allows the vertical movement of one section to be picked up by others down the line. Together, this motion allows the installation to transform from a series of leveled sections into an undulating form that becomes activated through interaction with its occupants. While the overall form of the bench is realized as a continuous landscape, each seating condition was designed according to existing ergonomic profiles in order to maximize comfort and functionality. This is further realized by allowing the tolerance of its motion to conform to the postures of the occupants using simply their weight as a point of activation for the movement of the sections. A series of internal notches linked together by elastic bands and reinforced by couplings located on the central pivot rods prevent lateral movement and ensures safety during motion. At its core, the design of the installation is a truly parametric system in which its use is not only for aesthetics, but also for construction, functionality, and comfort. The developed system has the ability to grow much larger and wider depending on the availability of resources and materials or contextual requirements of various spaces and environments.
